Role Actor
Oguri Hangan Ennoske
Yokoyama Daizen Danshiro
Namishichi Ennosuke

The medieval tale of the troubles and miraculous recovery of Oguri Hangan was a favorite subject for travelling priest-storytellers. Ennosuke has revived the story, drawing from various plays by some of kabuki's most famous writers and added his own unique production techniques to create one of the trademark plays of his repertory.

Act I: Oguri Hangan is to marry Princess Terute and inherit the province of Hitachi, but the evil Yokoyama Daizen has other plans. Daizen kills his brother, the current lord of the province, and steals the treasures of the house. He also tries to kidnap Princess Terute and force her to marry his son, but she manages to escape. Oguri comes to investigate the unrest and, accepting a dare from Daizen, mounts a wild horse and even gets it to stand on a Go board. Oguri unmasks Daizen's plots and goes to rescue Princess Terute and find the treasures to recover control of the house from Daizen.

Act II: Namishichi, a former retainer of Oguri, is caring for Princess Terute, but must hide her underneath the floor of his house. His brother-in-law is searching for the princess to collect the reward and, certain that Namishichi is hiding her, sets a trap for her. His plan fails, but he finds her hiding place and puts her on a boat on Lake Biwa. Namishichi arrives too late to stop them, but sacrifices his life to change the wind and bring her boat back.

Act III: While searching for the household treasures, Oguri finds one in the possession of Omaki, the wife of a rice merchant. Omaki's daughter Okoma falls in love with Oguri Hangan and he agrees to marry her in exchange for the treasure. He finds, though, that Princess Terute is working in the house as a servant. Even though he then turns down the marriage, Omaki gives him the treasure as shi is indebted to Princess Terute, but Okoma does not take the rejection lightly. She tries to kill the two, but ends up being killed herself. Her vengeful spirit makes Oguri Hangan lose his sight and cripples him. Princess Terute pulls him in a small cart, until prayers by the holy man Yugyo at the holy spot of Kumano heals him. Oguru Hangan and Princess Terute fly away on a magical horse to confront their enemies.

Act IV: Oguri Hangan and his forces defeat Daizen near a frozen waterfall and Terute is able to avenge her father's death.
